MacArthur Named Blue Ribbon School

For the third year in a row, IISD boasts a new U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School. The first high school in the district to receive the honor, MacArthur was named a Blue Ribbon school last week. Principal Tracie Fraley learned of the award via a letter from the Department of Education.

“Congratulations on your school’s selection as a 2001-2002 Blue Ribbon School,” the letter read. “You are one of 172 schools nationally recognized. After the rigorous and lengthy selection process, your reward is well-deserved.”

District and school officials will be invited to an awards ceremony in Washington D.C. later this year. Last year, Good was named a Blue Ribbon School, and in 1999-2000, Lamar had the honor.

Mavs Man Checks in at Keyes

Mavs Man, the mascot of the NBA Dallas Mavericks, visited Keyes to present a $1,000 check to resource teacher Tiffany Helm on Friday.

Helm and her class won a spirit contest sponsored by the Mavericks. Helm’s class decorated their room in Mavericks motif, and Helm submitted a week’s worth of lesson plans which included many Mavericks and basketball learning activities. For their creativity, they were chosen from among two dozen classrooms competing for the award.

The money, supplied by Academy Sports & Outdoors, is for classroom use.
