Class of 2010 Graduation Schedule
IISD
senior graduation activities will begin with cap and gown distribution
June 3 following graduation practices at the respective high schools.
The baccalaureate
program is scheduled for 7 p.m. June 3 at Calvary Church, located at
4401 N. Highway 161 in Irving. To view the map location of the

Commencement
Ceremonies begin June 4 at The Potter’s House Event Center, with Irving
High School at 2 p.m., and Nimitz High School at 7 p.m. Singley Academy
commencement will be at 9 a.m. June 5, and MacArthur High School at 2

As a reminder, the
last day for students is June 3, which is also an early-dismissal day.
Staff and faculty will observe a work day June 4, and report cards will

State, Local CTE Success
Students in Career &
Technical Education (CTE) classes at Singley Academy and MacArthur High
School won state and local competitions in their respective programs of
study May 22.
Twenty-one criminal
justice students from Singley Academy won several top awards at Texas
Public Safety Association State Competition at Sam Houston State
University in Huntsville. Students competed in skill events including
Bulletin Board Creation, Defensive Tactics, Forensics, Incident Report
Writing, and Traffic Stops.

A three-person team
of CTE accounting students from MacArthur High School won first place in
the Junior Achievement Banks in Action Spring Dallas Competition. Each
student won a $150 savings bond from Citibank and Junior Achievement. As
part of the competition, students learned the fundamentals of the
banking industry. Through the use of a computer simulation, students
formed teams, operated a bank, and developed strategies to make higher
profits than the competition.

Students Succeed with Social Studies
IISD students have
achieved national, state and local accolades for their accomplishments
in the area of social studies.
Duc Minh Le, senior
at Nimitz High School, represented Region X and won sixth place overall
at the state Citizen Bee competition May 15.
Le was also
recognized by the National History Club (NHC) as History Student of the
Year. Le received a copy of the new release George Washington and
Benedict Arnold: A Tale of Two Patriots, from the NHC as part of the
recognition. Le, along with Nimitz seniors Nabila Alam, Jocelyn
Alvarado, Duc Cao, Karina Cedillo, Ana Ibanez, Edgar Nuńez,
Telma Toral, Silvana Torres, Mauricio Valdovinos, and Rosaura Vega
qualified for membership in the NHC Scholar Society. Qualification
requires a student to have been an active member in the campus club for
two years and maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average.
Nimitz students
Jessica Alvarez and Lucy Vo will attend the all-expense-paid U.S.
Department of Education Congressional Academy in Washington D.C. during
the summer. Two students are selected yearly from each U.S. state and
territory, and for the second consecutive year, the two students chosen
from Texas are from Nimitz. Alvarez and Vo will study the Declaration of
Independence, the Gettysburg Address, and the I Have a Dream
speech with professors from Ashland College. The experience also allows
the participants to earn college credit.

Houston Middle
School students Kathryn Overland and Bedrick Topovich were selected as
delegates to the summer Education in Action 2010 Lone Star Leadership
Academy (LSLA). LSLA is a program dedicated to empowering young Texans
to become informed and active leaders in the community. Overland and
Topovich will attend a weeklong program in which they will participate
in activities, simulations and visits to significant Texas sites.

The IISD Geography Bee for grades four
and five was at MacArthur High School May 26, with the team from Schulze
Elementary School winning the first place. Each of the winning team
members received a blue ribbon and a world atlas. Team members are Lilly
Hernandez, Claudia Orellana, Trey Rodriguez, Jackie Tran, David
Villatoro, Preston Wilson, and alternates Jackson Tran and Eduardo

IISD Summer Meals Program
The
Irving ISD Food Service Department has instituted a summer feeding
program for community members age 18 or younger.
Irving residents can
eat breakfast and lunch at no cost at any of the district’s summer
school sites. For security purposes, and to prevent the disturbance of
summer educational programs, potential visitors are asked to contact the
school to determine where to enter the building.
According to
government regulations, the summer feeding program is designed for
individuals meeting the age criteria. All food must be consumed at the
school and may not be shared with others. Individuals not meeting the
age requirement are welcome to purchase a meal at district-established
prices. Visitors meeting the age requirement for free meals are limited
to one breakfast and one lunch per day.
