Volunteers Receive Crystal Apples

Irving Association of Texas Professional Educators (ATPE) recently recognized individuals and companies who have dedicated numerous hours to the success of students attending IISD schools. During their Tenth Annual Awards Banquet at The Academy of Irving ISD, Irving ATPE members presented Crystal Apple Awards to individuals or groups in four categories – business, community, civic and education.

Recipients of the 2002 Crystal Apple Awards are:   Crescent Real Estate, Good Elementary School; Crescent Real Estate Equities, LTD, Schulze Elementary School; Tracy Newton, Schulze Elementary School; Sara Woodrow, John Haley Elementary School; Burnell Stehlman, Schulze Elementary School; Sherry Boone, Lively Elementary School; and Gary Schepf, The Academy of Irving ISD. A special “life-long service” Crystal Apple Award was presented to Will DeBerry, member of the IISD Board of Trustees at the May 6 IISD Board of Trustees Meeting.

The Crystal Apple Award, which was first presented in 1993, recognizes those in the community who make a difference in the education of students in the Irving Independent School District.

Brockette Wins National Foundation Award

Jack Brockette, Irving High School art teacher, has been selected as a Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Winner of the Power of Art Award.  Brockette will attend the Power of the Art Workshop at the Lab School of Washington, D.C. on May 31. Robert Rauschenberg, a Master of Modern Art who learned that he had dyslexia in his forties, initiated the workshop as a means of bringing together teachers of special needs students.  This year, out of hundreds of outstanding applications, 30 elementary, junior high, and high school teachers from 29 states have been invited to attend the workshop to share lesson plans and to create new ideas for teaching art.  The workshop will be followed by an awards ceremony and reception at the National Gallery of Art hosted by the artist.

City of Irving Honors Bradley

Helen Bradley, Nimitz High School history teacher and sponsor of Junior Historians, was the recipient of the Environmental Excellence Award presented by the City of Irving Public Health & Environmental Services Department at Keep Irving Beautiful’s annual award event April 26.

The Environmental Excellence Award is a special award given to honor exemplary individuals, businesses or schools who have given an extraordinary amount of time, energy, and commitment toward the betterment of Irving’s environment.

During the past nine years, Bradley and her students have collected chemicals, electronics, and other household recyclables. They have collected dryer lint, light bulbs, and neckties – all used to make Christmas ornaments. They have participated in city and county clean up events, tagged thousands of fresh cut Christmas Trees for Irving’s annual Christmas Tree Round-Up, and have walked in numerous parades promoting recycling and a beautiful community.

MacArthur Symphony Performs at Meyerson

This past Friday, the MacArthur High School Wind Symphony competed at the American Classic Music Festival held at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.  They earned a First Division and were chosen third place overall in class 5A. This marks the tenth award or trophy given to the band this school year for excellence in performance.

Will James is band director and Bryan Bond is assistant director.

Irving High Choir Wins Festival Awards

The Irving High School A Cappella Choir won First Division Performance and Outstanding Performance trophies at the Buccaneer Music Festival in Corpus Christi on May 4. The students also toured the USS Lexington, the Corpus Christi Science & History Museum, and participated in activities with other students competing at the festival.

Karen Thomas is choral director at Irving High.

Cosmetology Student Qualifies for National Contest

Irving High School student Natalia Herrera placed first in Male Haircutting at the State VICA Contest and qualified for national contest in June. This is the first time a cosmetology student has qualified for national competition. Herrera is a second year cosmetology student at Ratteree and her teacher is Gina Shaver Morgan.

Nimitz Senior Receives Special Scholarship

Nimitz High School senior Sterling Cash has been selected to receive a Special Scholarship from National Merit Scholarship Corporation sponsored by Greyhound Lines, Inc.  Winners in the competition for Special Scholarships were chosen from a pool of candidates who fulfilled the sponsor’s criteria and scored high on the 2000 Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test.

Academy Students Win State Electronics Contests

Academy of Irving ISD students Hector Carmona and David Cruz won state honors at the State VICA Contest in Fort Worth. Carmona placed first in Electronic Applications/Technical Information and Cruz placed second in Electronic Technology/Skills. Gary Kennedy, Academy career and technology teacher, serves as VICA sponsor.

Nimitz Students Win FCCLA Honors at State

Two Nimitz High School students placed in state competition at the Family, Career & Community Leaders of America State Leadership Conference in Corpus Christi.

Christy Canney won second place in Occupational Entrepreneurship and the team of Jennifer Carter, Belinda Cleary and Ashley West won first alternate in Occupational Skills for Life.

Participation in these events provides opportunities for members to develop specific lifetime skills in character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge and vocational preparation. Theresa Burkhalter, career and technology teacher, is FCCLA sponsor.

Media Technology Students Cover Nelson Classic

Four media technology students and teacher Aaron Cappotelli from The Academy of Irving ISD will cover the Byron Nelson Golf Classic this week at the Four Seasons Resort. The students – Mikael Canales, Jessica Atkinson, Ray Williams and Will Penson – will present sports reports about the event on IISD Channel 23.

Lee Students Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Bilingual classes at Lee Elementary School presented a Cinco de Mayo performance for parents and teachers May 2. The presentation included traditional Mexican dances and songs. This past Sunday, the students performed at the Wal-Mart Superstore at highway 635 and MacArthur. Wal-Mart provided $500 to the bilingual classes to purchase costumes for the performance.

Bowie Sponsors Art Show

Bowie Middle School hosted its third annual Art Show in the school library May 2.  Teachers and staff placed blue ribbons on their favorites among this year’s exhibit of artwork by students in Mrs. Nancy Petty’s and Mr. Preston Jones’ art classes.   Best of Show went to Thach Nguyen, 8th grade art design student, for his Pointillism project depicting hummingbirds among flowers.  Currently, the library is showcasing students’ original yarn weavings.
