Clayton Made National Merit Scholar
Grant Clayton, a senior at Nimitz High School and
member of the powerhouse Nimitz Academic Decathlon team, has been named
a National Merit Scholar and awarded a $2,500 scholarship from the
National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
More than 1.2 million students from more than 20,000
high schools across the country entered the Merit Scholarship Program by
taking the 2000 Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test as juniors. Less
than 8,000 of those students are named National Merit Scholars.

Brock Named Mandel Fellow
Rosemarie Brock, eighth grade reading teacher at Lamar
Middle School, was selected as a Mandel Fellow by the United States
Holocaust Memorial Museum. The Mandel Fellowship Program was established
to develop a national corps of skilled secondary school educators who
will serve as leaders in Holocaust education in their schools, their
communities, and their professional organizations.
Each year, 25 educators are selected from across the
nation for the honor. These educators must show evidence of extensive
knowledge of Holocaust history, successful teaching experience, and
participation in community and professional organizations.

Boundary Change Meetings
The district is holding two meetings to seek public
input on elementary school boundary changes this week. The first, held
April 30 at Lamar, dealt with boundary changes in the southern part of
the district. The other, to be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Travis, will
focus on boundary changes in the north half of the district.

In October, voters approved a bond issue that included
money to build three elementary schools. Plans are underway now for one
in the north and one in the south part of the district.
The IISD Board of Trustees and administration wish to
encourage community participation in the process of establishing new
school boundaries.

Two IISD Students Place in State Media Fair
Two IISD elementary students placed in the Texas
Computer Education Association’s Media Fair.
Dre’ Price and Kaitlin Walters won second place in
desktop publishing with “Mosquitoes,” a brochure about mosquitoes. Price
and Walters attend Hanes Elementary and were sponsored by Carlene
Wright.
Vy Cao-Nguyen won third place in digital graphics with
“Winter Winds,” a Kid Pix drawing. Cao-Nguyen attends Townley Elementary
and was sponsored by Gretchen Doll.
The winners will be honored at an awards celebration
at the InfoMart in Dallas on Tuesday, May 14.

Vocational Ed Luncheon
The Irving ISD Business Advisory Committee for
Vocational Special Needs will host its annual appreciation luncheon for
high school students in the district’s work program or the Community
Based Training Program on Wednesday, May 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
at the Irving Arts Center. Both students and their employers will be
honored. The Special Education Department will also recognize Business
Advisory Council members for their assistance throughout the year.

IHS Band Places at Contest
The Irving High School band shined at the Bluebonnet
Classic Music Festival in San Antonio last weekend. The concert band was
awarded an Excellent rating and the symphonic band received a Superior
rating. Two band members were chosen as outstanding soloists at the
contest. The students are senior Nicole Martella on piccolo and
sophomore Ryan Williams on tuba.

VICA Students Qualify for Nationals
Three IISD students placed in state VICA/Skills USA
contests last weekend, qualifying them to compete at the national
meeting this summer.
Irving High School senior Natalia Herrera took top
honors in cosmetology for male haircutting. Herrera’s teacher, Gina
Shaver Morgan, said this is the first time that an IISD cosmetology
student has qualified for the national meet.
Hector Carmona from the Academy of Irving ISD won the
electronic applications/technical information contest, and Academy
student David Cruz placed second in electronic technology/skills.

Hanes Students Recognized in Art Contest
Five Hanes Elementary art students received
certificates of recognition for their entries in the 2002 Human Rights
Art Contest “Seasons of Peace,” sponsored by the Texas School Counselor
Association.
The students are: fifth graders Olivia Hamilton and
Shayna Rumsey, and fourth graders Tommee Peeravong and Mari Elizabeth
Webb.
Entries were submitted under the direction of Anna
Whitesinger, Hanes art teacher, and Pat McCallister and Janell Ferguson,
Hanes counselors.
