Singley Celebration Planned
The Irving ISD Board of Trustees has
scheduled a special retirement celebration for 3-5 p.m. May 31 at The
Academy of Irving ISD to honor Jack E. Singley, retired superintendent
of schools, for his 44 years of service with IISD.
Singley
joined Irving ISD in 1965 as math teacher at MacArthur High School. From
1965 to 1988 he served as teacher, principal, personnel director, and
assistant superintendent for administration. He was appointed
Superintendent of Schools in October 1988 and during Singley’s tenure,
eight schools were added to Irving ISD, the district increased from
2,309 employees in 1988 to more than 4,177, and peak enrollment grew
from 21,887 to approximately 33,233 students. Until announcing his
retirement March 23, Singley was one of the longest-serving school
superintendents in Texas.

Crockett Teen to Attend Leadership
Academy
Megan Lloyd, eighth grader at
Crockett Middle School, has been selected to attend the Education in
Action’s Lone Star Leadership Academy in Houston August 10-14.
Lloyd is the daughter of Rhodes
Lloyd and Nancy Lesky, and is active in Crime Stoppers, Student Council,
National Junior Honor Society, and girls’ athletics at Crockett. She was
recommended for the Academy by her reading teacher, April Scott. Scott’s
recommendation, coupled with Lloyd’s academic success and demonstrated
leadership ability, qualified her to be among seventh and eighth graders
from across Texas attending the Academy.

The week-long program includes
sessions to develop leadership skills and learning about Texas and state
government. Sessions also include career and internship opportunities
and visits to many significant Texas landmarks.

HOSA to Honor Singley with Blood
Drive
The
Health Occupations Students of America organization at The Academy of
Irving ISD has scheduled a blood drive for 10 a.m.-6 p.m. May 26 at the
Academy in honor of Jack Singley, retired IISD superintendent.
Donors must be 16 years of age or
older, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health.
Sixteen-year-old donors must have written permission from their parent
or guardian. Donors must bring a valid picture ID at the time of
donation.
All donors receive T-shirt, a
mini-physical including blood pressure and iron level check at the time
of donation, and cholesterol results. Donors are encouraged to have a
meal prior to giving blood.

Ceremony to Honor Foundation Fellows
Irving Schools Foundation (ISF) will
host its annual Perpetual Giving Tree Ceremony from 5:30-6:30 p.m.
May 14 in the IISD Administration Building atrium.
The
ceremony honors the 2009 Sustainer and 2009 Fellows announced during
Breakfast with the Stars April 13, and during the 2008 Fall Education
Luncheon. As part of the breakfast program, three ISF Fellows and one
Sustainer were endowed. The Sustainer contribution of $5,000 was made by
Christina Gears in honor of her husband, Irving Mayor Herbert A. Gears.
ISF Fellows – a $1,000 contribution designated for the ISF general
endowment fund – were named in honor of Charles Kirk, Peggy Masters,
David Pfaff, Sharon Requinton Pfaff, and former IISD Superintendent Jack
Singley. The Sustainer and Fellows will have their names engraved on the
Perpetual Giving Tree, located in the atrium of the Administration
Building.

The
ceremony will also serve to recognize and dedicate four new scholarships
that were presented at the 2009 Breakfast with the Stars. Scholarships
are: Barbara Cardwell Future of Education Scholarship, Betty & Ben
Carpenter Memorial Scholarship, Inelda Alaniz Scholarship, and Kenneth
Yancey Memorial Scholarship.

Sick Leave Bank Directors
The Sick Leave Bank Board of
Directors met May 5 and certified the election of the following IISD
employees to serve on the board for the next two years: Glenda Shelton,
elementary representative; Melanie Weekly, middle school representative;
Vanessa Vega, high school representative; Nancy Chandler,
paraprofessional representative; and Jimmy Collins, facilities services
representative.
The new directors join seven other
members on the board: Kay Branch, Judith Conway, Vanessa Cruz, Ralph
Diaz, Kay Kelbly, Satchie McKinnie, and Jeanette Severson. Judyann
Robinson, risk manager, and Bill Althoff, acting assistant
superintendent for personnel & administration, serve as ex-officio
members of the board.

Graduate Job Fair Re-Scheduled
Irving
ISD graduate summer job fair originally scheduled for May 5 has been
re-scheduled for 3-6 p.m. May 26.
The job fair will be in the
Fellowship Center of South MacArthur Church of Christ and is designed to
help graduating IISD high school students locate part-time employment
during the summer and while they attend college. Admission is free and
open to the public.
