Art Students Draw Winning Scores
Thirteen IISD
students from Irving High School, MacArthur High School, and The Academy
of Irving ISD were awarded gold medals for their submissions in the
state level Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) April 18-19.
Leila Borougerdi,
junior at the Academy, was awarded one of only 128 Gold Seal Awards from
the contest. Of the 20,000 judged works from across Texas, Borougerdi’s
sculpture “Elizabeth” was selected to join the exhibit, and will travel
the state for display at various venues. The traveling exhibit of 128
pieces will end at the state capitol and be displayed until November.

A total of 22 IISD
students advanced to state VASE, competing at University of Houston at
Clearlake. Student work was exhibited and judged among more than 1,700
pieces submitted from across Texas. Students were rated on a scale of 1
to 4 on intent, execution and technical skills, use of the elements and
principals of art, asthetics and critical judgment, and personal
expression. In addition to the competitive events, students participated
in workshops, viewed demonstrations, and received instruction from
professional artists.

Dugger Named Interim Superintendent

The Irving ISD Board
of Trustees voted unanimously April 20 to name Neil Dugger, Ed.D., as
interim superintendent.
Dugger, who has been
assigned as assistant superintendent for personnel and administration
since May 2006, has been serving as acting superintendent since March.
He joined Irving ISD in 1979 and has served as teacher, principal and as
director of personnel, all within Irving ISD. Dugger earned a Doctorate
of Education and Master of Education from the University of North Texas,
and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Angelo State University.

Early Childhood, Elementary School
Registration
Irving ISD has
announced early childhood school and elementary school
information meetings and
registration guidelines for the 2009-2010
school year.
An information
meeting regarding early childhood school registration will be at 5:30
p.m., May 5, at the early childhood school in the student’s attendance
area. There will be no prekindergarten student registration at the
informational meetings.
Prekindergarten
registration is July 28-30 at Austin Middle School, located at 825 E.
Union Bower. Registration is open to students who will be at least age
four on or before September 1, 2009. Eligibility requirements are based
on income, language, homeless status, military dependent status, and/or
in foster care.

only be enrolled during their school’s scheduled dates and times at

Elementary students in kindergarten
through grade five who are new to Irving ISD may register for school May
4-22 and August 10-18 from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 12:30-3 p.m. at their
neighborhood schools. To register
a student, the following information must be provided: updated
immunization records, birth certificate, student’s Social Security card,
and proof of residency (lease or utility bill).
All students who are entering school for
the first time and speak a language other than English must be given an
oral language test to evaluate their language skills. For early
childhood school students,
testing will be available at Austin and will be administered to students
on their school’s registration day. For elementary school students, testing
will be available 8 a.m.-4 p.m., May 11-15, May 18-22, May 25-29, and
June 1-5 at the IISD Language Test Center, 820 O’Connor Road. Testing
will resume August 10, but will be available by appointment only by
calling 972-273-6688. The test is mandated by law and is a necessary
part of the student’s school record.

Job Seekers, Employers Invited to
Graduate Summer Job Fair
Irving
ISD will be hosting a graduate summer job fair from 3-6 p.m. May 5 in
the Fellowship Center of South MacArthur Church of Christ. IISD is
sponsoring the job fair in collaboration with Greater Irving-Las Colinas
Chamber of Commerce and Irving Public Library.
The event, now in
its second year, is designed to help graduating IISD high school
students locate part-time employment during the summer and while they
attend college. Admission is free and open to the public.
Companies
participating in the job fair include: AAA Texas, Dallas County, Dallas
County Probation, Express Employment Professionals, Four Seasons Resort
& Club, Irving ISD, Irving Police Department, North Lake College,
Primerica Financial Services, RARE Learning Center, Resource One Credit
Union, Sonny Bryan’s Smokehouse & Catering Division, United States Army,
and Your Federal Credit Union.

Network
Lively Elementary School’s television
broadcasting students visited Trinity Broadcasting Network April 17
to compare students’ daily broadcast operations to those of an
international station.
