Austin Student Wins Scholarship
Austin Middle School student David Simmons is one
of nine seventh graders who outscored more than 97 percent of the
nation’s college-bound high school seniors on the SAT or ACT tests
recently. The Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP)
conducts an annual talent search to identify bright students across
the South and Midwest. Of the 76,735 students who participated in
this year’s search, nine students scored among the highest, earning
scores that most college freshmen would envy.
For his achievement, Simmons will receive a full
scholarship to attend TIP’s Center for Summer Studies Program at
Davidson College in Charlotte, North Carolina or at the University
of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.
Simmons and the other eight students will be
honored at a ceremony at the Duke Chapel at Duke University on
Monday, May 20.
Simmons was also honored recently for placing 45th
out of 287 students at the state MathCounts competition in Austin.
