Middle School All-Region Band Results

Six band students from Irving ISD middle schools auditioned and were named to All-Region bands following their audition November 7-8 at Reed Middle School in Duncanville.

All-Region Symphonic Band members include:

●  Dominic Biasi, de Zavala Middle School, tuba

●  Gianina Casale, Houston Middle School, flute

All-Region Concert Band members include:

●  Elias Mata, Bowie Middle School, percussion

●  Stephen Slaughter, Bowie Middle School, clarinet

●  Junior Gutierrez, de Zavala Middle School, bass clarinet

●  Adrian Munoz, de Zavala Middle School, percussion

Students named as All-Region alternates are:

●  Kristian Byrd, Bowie Middle School, tuba

●  Matt Fowler, Bowie Middle School, percussion

●  Giancarlo Salazar, de Zavala Middle School, cornet

Students named to the Symphonic Band earned top scores during the audition process, though placement in either All-Region performing groups was very selective, with a total of approximately 720 students from Central Texas having auditioned. All-Region bands will perform beginning at 6 p.m., January 17 at Duncanville High School auditorium.

Agriculture Students Win in District Competition

In District III competition November 13, agriculture students from Nimitz High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter claimed three first place finishes, a second place, and a fourth place finish competing against 13 other FFA chapters in Dallas County.


Future Farmers of America chapter members from Nimitz High School competed at District III competition November 13, winning several top awards and advancing to the Area 5 contest scheduled for November 22.

Zach Stephenson won first place in the Senior Creed Speaking event and Mirna Lucero took first in Greenhand Creed Speaking. Sara Fuller, Joseph Landtroop and Zach Stephenson won first place as a team for Agriculture Radio Broadcast. Patrick Gloria, Baldemar Martinez and Mirna Lucero won a team second place finish for Senior Skills in Veterinary. Brittany Harris won fourth place in the Job Interview event.

Teams placing first and second will advance to Area 5 FFA competition, held at Crowley High School November 22.

Oh Named to All-State Orchestra

Daniel Oh, junior violist at Irving High School, was selected for the second consecutive year to Texas All-State Orchestra.


Daniel Oh, junior at Irving High School, was selected for the Texas All-State Symphonic Orchestra.

Oh was selected for membership in the Symphony Orchestra, the All-State orchestra program’s most elite performing group. He earned the fourth highest score among all violists who auditioned, and is one of five orchestra students from Texas Music Educator’s Association Region 20 selected to join one of the three All-State orchestras.

All-State Symphony Orchestra is scheduled to perform at 7 p.m., February 14 at Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio.

Teacher Enrichment Grants Awarded

The Irving Schools Foundation awarded approximately $800 in Teacher Enrichment Grants for November.

November awardees included: Cyndi Brown, animal science, Nimitz High School; Mary Boyd, librarian, MacArthur High School; and Lisa Hill, instructional specialist, Townsell Elementary School.

The grants provide teachers with funding for professional development opportunities including attendance at seminars and workshops. Applications from teachers are due by the 10th of each month, are awarded for as much as $500 each, and are distributed September through May. Schedule for November 24-28

All Irving ISD schools and offices will be closed for the Thanksgiving holidays, November 26-28.

Monday and Tuesday, November 24-25, are also holidays for students and IISD employees will participate in staff development.  During these two days, all schools will be closed, but central administrative offices will be open for regular business hours. Offices reopen and classes resume December 1.

Employees Reminded to Update Benefits

Irving ISD employees who have experienced major life changing events are encouraged to update their health and benefits plans accordingly. Major events can include family births, adoptions, deaths, marriage or divorce. Health plans need to be updated within 30 days of a birth or adoption, and in the event of marriage or divorce, health and insurance plans need to be updated to reflect the correct premium payments.

Getting Into Their Studies with Costumes

Fifth grade students in Beth Cavazos’ class at Townsell Elementary School researched various presidents and first ladies prior to the national election held November 4 and completed their studies by dressing as the person they researched.

Gilbert Elementary School conducted the 10th annual Book Parade on October 31, following a day of visits from guest readers and the sharing of favorite stories by faculty and students.

Hats Off to Veterans at Lively
Kindergarten students at Lively Elementary School celebrated Veterans Day by making “army hats” and parading through the school.
