About 34,000 Commended
Students throughout the national are being recognized for their
exceptional academic promise. They placed among the top five percent of
more than 1.4 million students who entered the 2008 competition.
Students were qualified according to their scores on the Preliminary
Scholastic Assessment Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test
taken during the junior year of high school.

Hispanic Scholars Recognized
Four
Irving ISD seniors have been named National Hispanic Scholar for their
outstanding performance on the Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT)
among minority students. Recognitions are coordinated through The
College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

USDA Silver Schools
During
the Board of Trustees meeting October 6, trustees recognized the IISD
schools awarded Silver School status by the United States Department of
Agriculture, as part of the HealthierUS School Challenge.
Schools winning the Silver Award are: Barton Elementary School,
Brandenburg Elementary School, Britain Elementary School, Davis
Elementary School, Gilbert Elementary School, Hanes Elementary School,
John Haley Elementary School, Johnston Elementary School, Lively
Elementary School, Schulze Elementary School, and Stipes Elementary
School.
In
order to receive the Silver school designation, schools must meet or
exceed the nation’s second-highest standards for student exercise,
healthy meals, and nutrition education. The 11 IISD schools represent
the largest group of schools in a single school district in the state of
Texas to be recognized as Silver School winners at a single time.

Construction Updates
All weekly Irving ISD
construction progress reports have been posted to the IISD website.
For MacArthur High
School, many structural and foundation components have reached
completion including: pier drilling, structural-grade beam construction,
structural steel erection, and structural slab installation for the
classroom addition.
For The Academy of Irving
ISD, complete components include: final grading, pier drilling,
structural grade beam construction, and construction of the lower floor
wall.

Learning Skills for
Living
Student from Hope
Work’s sixth grade Skills for Living class at Bowie Middle School
attended Junior Achievement’s Finance Park to learn about the importance
of keeping a budget and planning for the future.

A Day Made Better
Representatives from OfficeMax congratulate Jerri Johnson, second grade
teacher at Lively Elementary School, for being rewarded with “A Day Made
Better”, a program sponsored by the OfficeMax in recognition of
innovative teachers who were recommended by the school principal.
