Texas Public Schools Week
Irving ISD schools are gearing up for a flood of visitors during
Texas Public Schools Week March 4-8. Across the state, schools are
inviting parents and community members to get a first-hand look at
their educational programs.
This year’s theme is, “Dive In!…to a different school of thought,”
and it represents a new model of public education driven by an
involved, informed community. “Dive in” is a challenge to the
community to immerse itself in supporting public schools. “Different
school” presents the idea of recent changes in public education in
the areas of technology, teaching styles, teacher training, graduate
requirements, minority accountability and athletics. All these
changes have brought positive growth that is beneficial to students.
“Of thought” speaks to the higher level of academic skills required
of today’s students.
Board Seeks Calendar Input
The
IISD Board of Trustees wants to hear from staff, parents and
community members about next year’s school calendar. Currently, the
board is examining three proposed calendars which are posted on the
District’s web site at www.irvingisd.net in English and Spanish.
The
board is asking for responses through the web site, but for those
constituents who do not have internet access, copies of the proposed
calendars can be obtained from any school principal or from Ralph
Diaz, administrative assistant to the superintendent, at the
administration building. Responses should be returned to him via
U.S. or campus mail at 901 O’Connor Rd., Irving, TX 75061.
All
responses must be received by Friday, March 1.

annual convention of the Texas School Public Relations Association
in Austin. The Public Information Department won five Gold Star
Awards for its web site, brochures, annual report, newsletter, and
information packet and two Silver
Star awards.
Irving ISD was among six districts with more than 10,000 students to

Prepping for the TAAS
Irving High School English teacher Brian Massegee led a TAAS camp
for tenth graders recently in anticipation of the statewide test.
Massegee’s students have a 98 percent passing rate for TAAS writing
and 99 percent for reading, according to Irving High counselor
Kimberly Ruthe.
“These are the English as a second language kids who so many say,
‘They are unteachable. They are just too far behind,’” Ruthe said.
“But Mr. Massegee said, ‘Oh yeah? Watch us.’”
