ICE Awards Set For February 26

Every day, students in the Irving ISD work hard to accomplish their academic and extracurricular goals. The Irving ISD Excellence Now Committee, appointed by the Board of Trustees, will honor these accomplishments through an awards ceremony February 26 at 7 p.m. in the Nimitz High School Auditorium.

The Irving Celebration of Excellence (ICE) Awards ceremony is designed to recognize excellent performances by IISD students and student organizations. Awards will be presented in five categories: Academics, Fine Arts, Athletics & Physical Education, Community Service, and Special Campus/District. Within each category, awards will be presented in three divisions: elementary, middle school, and high school.

A crystal trophy and $1,000 will be presented to the winning school in each division and category, and certificates will be presented to the students.

This year, musical entertainment will be provided by the IISD All-City Orchestra, Nimitz High School All-State musicians Ryan Perry and Jenny Smith, and MacArthur High School All-State vocalist Tonya Cadenhead.

School Board Candidate Workshops Offered

Area school board candidates and residents interested in running for the board can learn more about the demands and rewards of the office at a candidate workshop on Thursday, February 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Region X Education Service Center at 400 East Spring Valley Road in Richardson.

The workshop will provide participants a better understanding of what is involved in being elected and serving as a local trustee. Experienced school board members will explain board members’ key responsibilities and outline the qualities necessary for effective service.

Topics to be covered include what it’s like to be a trustee, key responsibilities of the board, division of authority with staff, how to campaign constructively, and where to find more information. Participants will also view A Call To Service, a Texas Association of School Boards video highlighting many aspects of board service and featuring several experienced school trustees.

The workshop is open to anyone and admission is free. For more information about the workshop, call Brenda Canul at TASB, 512-467-0222 or 800-580-8272, ext. 6104, or visit the TASB web site at www.tasb.org.
