Brown Teacher Published

Brown teacher Lorie Heydenburk will soon become a published author. Heydenburk received word last month that her manuscript, Seven Cookies, was selected for publication by Lee and Low Books of New York. Seven Cookies is a book for emergent readers about sharing and kindness.

“I was very surprised,” Heydenburk said. “It’s so hard to get all the things in there that publishers are looking for. It’s very exciting that they happened to choose mine.”  Heydenburk sent three manuscripts to Lee and Low in response to their call for works with multicultural themes for emergent readers.  “This was my first attempt at writing for general publication and I’m floored and thankful,” Heydenburk said.

Heydenburk has been published before with articles in the Texas Counseling Association Journal. She has been counselor at Brown for three years.

Middle School In-District Transfers Due April 1

With the opening of Irving ISD’s seventh middle school, boundary lines have been redrawn for students entering the sixth, seventh and eighth grades this fall. For the 2002-2003 school year, all students in these grades are required to attend the middle school in their new attendance zone unless an in-district transfer is approved by the principal of the school to which the student wishes to transfer.

Transfer requests will be accepted between March 1 and April 1. Transfer request forms are available at all IISD schools. Decisions to accept or reject transfer requests will be made by April 30.

The Lee PTA will sponsor a Sweetheart Banquet and Dance on Friday, February 15. Students are encouraged to attend the event with an adult that is important to them. It’s a night for dads, moms, aunts and uncles to be sweethearts, Lee art teacher Jennifer Parks said.

A lasagna dinner will be served from 5:30 p.m. with a dance following. A live deejay will provide the music and there will be a drawing for prizes. The event is semi-formal.

Bowie Chess Clubs In the News

Chess groups comprised of at-risk students and sponsored by Baylor Healthcare have been featured in newspaper and television news recently. Healthy Lunchrooms

Cafeteria managers took part in a new training class last week led by an Irving city health inspector. Lisa Pomroy gave a presentation about proper dishwashing and other sanitation procedures in cafeterias.

Food Service Director Michael Rosenberger said the event was part of a new partnership between the District and the city to ensure the best possible service at school cafeterias.

“We envision this partnership being one where we would have the city’s health inspectors become a regular part of our manager meetings and in-services, to provide the latest training on health, safety and sanitation to our managers,” Rosenberger said.

Brooks, Champagne and Perry are seniors at MacArthur. Rosales and Irvin attend Irving High, and have been working as hospitality interns at the D/FW Marriott. They have studied with Chef King Davis. All five students will advance to the state competition in Corpus Christi in April.
