Jones Elected, Stipes Re-Elected to Board

On Saturday, Irving residents elected one new trustee and re-elected another to govern the district.

Valerie Jones won the Place 4 seat on the IISD Board of Trustees being vacated by Ruben Franco, who chose not to seek re-election.  Jones won 84.2 percent of the vote over challenger Ruben M. Carranza, who garnered 15.8 percent.

Also, Randy Stipes was re-elected to his Place 3 seat, winning 83.3 percent of the vote over challenger Manuel A. Benavidez, who received 16.7 percent.

Election results are unofficial until the vote is canvassed.  Newly elected trustees will be sworn in and installed Monday at the next board meeting where Board officers also will be elected.  For more on the election results, access the City of Irving website at www.ci.irving.tx.us and go to the Irving Elections link.

Irving Students Win at State Track Meet

Two Irving ISD students won state championships during the UIL State Track & Field Championships held Saturday in Austin.

Adron Tennell of Irving High School was the Class 5A champion in the long jump. His winning jump of 25 feet, 7¼ inches was a wind-aided state record. His coach is Joseph Pouncey. Jennifer Ugochukwu of Nimitz High School was the Class 5A champion in the shot put. She threw 43 feet, 10 inches to claim the gold medal. Her coach is Leah Hollie.

In addition, the Irving High girls 4x100 relay team earned a top five finish, placing fifth in the state. Their coach is Joseph Evans.

Academy Students Place at SkillsUSA

Advertising design students at The Academy of IISD performed well during the SkillsUSA Texas Leadership & Skills Conference April 27-29 in Fort Worth.

Danny Ramirez won two state medals, a first place gold medal in State T-Shirt Design and a third place bronze medal in Advertising Design Technical Test. His winning T-shirt design will be printed and sold at next year’s state contest.

Also, Merrill Mathew and Laura Toller finished in the top 10 in Advertising Design Skills, placing fourth and sixth, respectively, out of all ad design students in Texas.

Academy seniors Merrill Mathew, Danny Ramirez and Laura Toller placed high during the SkillsUSA state competition in advertising design. Ramirez won gold and bronze medals while Mathew and Toller earned top 10 finishes.

Academy students receiving first place blue ribbons for various projects include Ramirez, Mathew, Toller, Alondra Garcia, Orlando Aguilar, Shannon Passanante, Ryan Tomberlin, Kayla Lewis, Zach Glover, Benjamin Bailey, Walter Ramirez, and Jordyn Cook.

In addition, two students who serve as SkillsUSA district officers plan to attend the annual SkillsUSA Leadership Seminar in Kerrville this summer. Walter Ramirez is District 6 parliamentarian and Rita Chaidez is District 6 reporter.

Scholarship Applications Due to Foundation May 24

The application deadline for John Stipes Motivational Pre-College Scholarships is 5 p.m. May 24.  Applications may be submitted at the Irving Schools Foundation (ISF) office in the Administration Building.

John Stipes Motivational Pre-College scholarships are available to students in grades 9-12 who have overcome adverse social, economic or personal situations to graduate from high school.  Students may obtain assistance for summer school, night school, correspondence courses, GED tuition, or ACT/SAT prep courses.

Find Your Property Tax Balance Online

It is now possible for Irving ISD taxpayers to find their property tax balances online. Taxpayers can search for any account whose property taxes are collected by the IISD Tax Office. The website can be accessed at:

Autographed Books at Lamar

The seventh grade English classes at Lamar Middle School were treated to autographed books from Random House as a result of a writing contest. Lamar Librarian Rosemarie Brock returned with the books after recently attending the International Reading Association convention in Chicago.

Daddy Daughter Dance at Davis

The Cubettes at Davis Elementary School held their annual Daddy Daughter Dance April 28. The evening consisted of Cubettes, girls in fourth and fifth grade, their younger sisters, and their fathers. Each girl received a tiara at the princess-themed dance.

Hands-On Art at Schulze
Jan Thomas, art teacher at Schulze Elementary School, conducted her annual Hands-On Art project, funded by the City of Irving. The program is aimed at first graders, with the focus this year on the art of shoemaking. The two-day workshop involved 125 first graders.

Celebration of Americas at Davis
Bilingual classes at Davis Elementary School presented an event titled Celebration of Americas May 4 as part of Cinco de Mayo celebrations. The event featured traditional and contemporary Latino dances, a local band, and information on the diverse cultures at Davis

Career Fair Day at Good
Good Elementary School recently sponsored a Career Fair Day, as students talked to community members about their job responsibilities.

 

Electricity Kits at Lively
Fourth graders at Lively Elementary School experimented with electricity kits, which are used as a tool to reinforce the science portion of the TAKS exam.

Thomas Haley Choirs Compete at Contest
Thomas Haley Elementary School choirs competed during a contest at Sandy Lake May 10. The Recorder Choir received a Division 1 rating while the Honor Choir received a Division 2 rating.
