Governor Names Anderson to Council

Governor Rick Perry announced the appointment of Irving ISD Executive Director of Technology Jennifer Anderson to the state’s Telecommunications Planning & Oversight Council.

The council collects and manages information about telecommunications networks throughout state government, and performs strategic planning for all state telecommunications services.

"This kind of involvement gives me the opportunity to get the state view, and that is central to the decisions we make here as a district," Anderson said.

Anderson has 29 years experience in education. She is a member of the Texas Computers in Education Association as well as the Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development. She formerly served on the board of directors for the Texas Department of Information Resources, and she is a former Texas Education Agency Division of Instructional Technology appointee to the statewide E-Rate Working Committee and E-Rate Technology Plan Peer Review Committee.

Staffing de Zavala

As the District prepares to open its seventh middle school, one of its most important tasks is finding the right faculty for it. That’s the purpose of three meetings to be held this month at three District elementary schools.

Bill McAlister, who will be principal at de Zavala Middle School, will host the meetings on January 14 at Lee Elementary, January 16 at Lively Elementary, and January 17 at Townley Elementary. All three meetings start at 4 p.m.

Interested employees may also contact McAlister directly by calling the Ratteree Center at 972-313-4818.

These meetings will provide an opportunity for employees to find out more about the new school and its unique characteristics. For instance, the science program will be able to use three acres of wetlands on school property for hands-on learning.

The school will be open for the 2002-2003 school year. There are openings for all classroom teachers as well as athletics, music and other extracurricular activities.

Go West, Young Man

Fourth and fifth graders will take a musical tour of the Wild Wild West next week when the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra performs its annual Young People’s Concert.

Young listeners and their teachers will be treated to a bonanza of melodies selected to evoke images of American western heritage – tunes like “On the Trail” from the Grand Canyon Suite by Grofe, “Overture to William Tell” by Rossini, “Hoedown” from Rodeo by Copeland, and the “Theme from The Magnificent Seven” by Bernstein.

The annual youth concerts are designed to expose young people to a rich tradition of great orchestral music and assist area schools in making appreciation of the arts part of a well-rounded educational experience.

For more information, contact the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra at 972-580-1566.
