ICE Awards Welcome
the Why Guy
The
sixth annual ICE (Irving Celebration of Excellence) Awards, set for
Thursday night, will again be hosted by the Why Guy, Mike Castellucci.
It is being held this year at MacArthur High School. A reception in the
cafeteria begins at 6:15 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony at 7 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public.

Castellucci, a “special assignments” reporter for the
WFAA-TV Channel 8 Daybreak show, promises to make the evening memorable
with his unique brand of humor.
The awards ceremony, the closest thing to Oscar night in
Irving, rewards outstanding achievements by Irving ISD students and
staff in six categories: Academics, Fine Arts, Athletics/Physical
Education, Community Service/Citizenship, Special Campus/District, and
Innovative Programs.
Irving Community Television Network will videotape and
replay the show on Comcast Cable Channel 15 at the following times:
Sunday, March 5 at 9:30 p.m.; Tuesday, March 7 at 9 p.m.; Thursday,
March 9 at 6:30 p.m.; and Sunday, March 19 at 9:30 p.m.

Nimitz Decathlon Team
Gets 4th at State
Last weekend, the Nimitz High School Academic Decathlon
team finished fourth out of 41 teams at the Texas Academic Decathlon in
Aldine. This marks the seventh time in the past nine years that the team
has finished among the top five in the state.
Plano Senior High School won the state contest, followed
by San Antonio Holmes High School, Lubbock High School, Nimitz, and
Corpus Christi King High School.
Leading the way for Nimitz were Kathy Avila, the team’s
high scorer, and Michael Grant, Amber Birdwell and Kyle Robertson, who
won scholarship money as a result of their performances. Other team
members contributing to the team effort were Matthew McCrary, Nydia
Vega, Gemini Mathew, Jeremiah Glenn and Shehznan Baqui.

Advance to State VASE
Fourteen Irving SD
students who participated in the Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE) in
Coppell last month were chosen to advance to a state-level competition.
They will show their work at the state contest April 8 in Houston.

One DI Team Headed to
State
One of the nine IISD teams that competed in the regional
Destination ImagiNation! tournament last weekend in Colleyville advanced
to state.
Five students from Irving High School – Amy Bellows,
Ankita Krishnan, Alex Lewis, Joe Paul and Jason Whitfield – will take
their problem-solving skills to the state tournament at Corpus Christi
later this month.
Destination ImagiNation! is a creative problem-solving
competition in which students spend several months on a long-term
challenge presented at the tournament as well as an impromptu challenge
during a short period of time at the tournament.

Irving High JROTC
Wins National Championship
The Irving High School Marine Junior ROTC drill team
claimed its fifth consecutive national championship this month at the
American Legion National Drill Championships in Montgomery, Alabama.
Competing against 67 teams from across the country, the
team won the following honors:

Public Schools Week
Around the Corner
Students and teachers will celebrate Texas Public Schools
Week March 6-10. Irving ISD schools have scheduled open houses for
parents and neighbors to get a first-hand look at the teaching and
learning that happen every day in IISD. The theme this year is Driven to
Succeed.
High schools will hold open houses Monday evening, March
6. Middle school open houses will be Tuesday, March 7. Elementary and
early childhood schools will open their doors to visitors Thursday,
March 9. Times vary by campus.

FISL Membership Drive
Scheduled for March 1−9
Friends of Irving School Libraries (FISL) is sponsoring
its second annual membership drive March 1-9. Friends, community
members, local businesses, and advocates for literacy are invited to
join this not-for-profit organization’s campaign to increase literacy by
building student home libraries. All donations are tax deductible.

IISD Wins TSPRA
Awards
The
IISD Public Information Department won three Gold Star and two Silver
Star awards at the Texas School Public Relations Association (TSPRA)
February 23 in Austin. Each year, TSPRA recognizes school communicators
for outstanding work in both print and electronic media. More than 1,000
entries were received.
IISD won Gold Stars for website design (www.irvingisd.net),
computerized presentation (teacher recruiting CD), and
promotional/marketing video (IISD Respects Its Teachers). Silver Stars
were awarded for special interest/feature series video (Senior
Spotlight) and news/information video (District News).
