Banking
on a Partnership
Thomas
Haley announced a new partnership with Washington Mutual this week that
will bring banking to school. Thanks to the help of the school’s
newest partner, students can open their own saving accounts in the Haley
School Savings Bank. Washington Mutual volunteers act as tellers,
managing the students’ accounts at the “Haley Branch Bank.”
The
program is designed to teach students good financial habits and give
them an opportunity to practice math skills in a practical
setting.
Washington
Mutual has offered the School Savings program for more than 75 years.

Learning
Is Afoot at Farine
Students
in Gabrielle Orbison’s third grade class at Farine were visited by a
podiatrist recently. Dr. Ronica Halcombe talked with students about
being a foot doctor. She gave them gloves, masks, footies and hats, and
even cast some of the students’ feet.

Britain
Mural Dedication
Scores
of teachers, administrators and retired educators helped dedicate a
mural at Britain in honor of former Britain Principal Barbara Kemp
Tuesday night.
The
painting, on a wall in the corner of the school’s library, depicts
downtown Irving. It was painted by Lewisville artist Lori Fagen.
Kemp,
who retired in 1999, was principal at Britain for six years and served
the district for 28 years.
The
dedication ceremony was attended by her former co-workers, students, and
family.
Completion
of the mural was organized by former Britain librarian Rosemarie Klassen.
The dedication ceremony was coordinated by current Britain librarian
Leslie Gongora.

Austin
Christmas Party
Christmas
came early for some students at Austin. On December 1, 45 Austin
students attended a Christmas party at Kids R Kids day care center in
Irving. The party was thrown by Foot Star, Inc., an athletic footwear
company and a partner in the Communities In Schools program.
Foot
Star provided refreshments and arts and crafts activities for the
students and their families. The company also bought gifts for the
students. Kids R Kids donated the use of their facilities for the event.
The
students enjoyed cookies, punch, face painting, and a visit from Santa.
