State Officials to Attend Literacy Event

Two state officials and a local Irving official will be featured guests during Literacy Day at Keyes Elementary School on Friday, December 2.

Mavis B. Knight, member of the State Board of Education, State Representative Linda Harper-Brown and Irving Mayor Herbert Gears will be featured as celebrity readers at different times December 2. To promote literacy, each will be reading books to classes of students.

The reading schedule is as follows:

Gears: 8:30-9:30 a.m.

Harper-Brown: 9:30-10 a.m.

Knight: 1-2:30 p.m.

For this year’s event, the theme is inspired by the book Oh, The Places You’ll Go! by Dr. Seuss. Students, parents and staff will dress as a character from a favorite book and participate in activities designed to promote literacy and the love of reading.

“We believe that our students are truly on a journey to excellence and that literacy is the key that will take them to their chosen destinations,” Keyes Principal Chris Morgan said.

JA, AA to Partner for Event at Barton

Junior Achievement (JA) of Dallas and American Airlines are partnering for a “JA in a Day” program at Barton Elementary School on Thursday, December 8.

“JA in a Day” is a special Junior Achievement delivery method that facilitates the partnership between a business and an elementary school. Like all JA programs, business volunteers help educate and inspire youth about free enterprise, business and economics.

Through this method, the entire program is covered in the course of one day at the school. At the end of the school day, students will have completed all five JA lessons and will have earned their JA certificates. Normally, the process takes five weeks to complete. The one-day program is particularly convenient for business volunteers with difficult travel or work schedules.

American Airlines will provide about 80 volunteers for the program December 8. The event will kick off with a breakfast at 7:15 a.m. Volunteers are expected to be finished by 2:30 p.m.
