U.S. Constitution Day
With the passage of a
little known provision by Congress in 2004, every school and college
that receives federal money must teach about the Constitution on
September 17, the day the document was adopted by the Constitutional
Convention in 1787. On that date the delegates departed for home and to
convince their states to ratify the document. However, the document was
not ratified until June 21, 1788.
Since September 17 is a
Saturday this year, schools and colleges are permitted to observe the
day during the week before or the week after.
In preparation for this
year’s observance, IISD teaching and learning staff members under the
leadership of Social Studies Coordinator Sherry Perkins are working with
teachers and school administrators. Various age appropriate books and
websites will be used as resources for presentations to all students in
the district.

Michael Grant poses a question to Powell at the SMU Tate
Lecture Series question/answer session. |
Grant asked Powell about
partisanship in the U.S. Congress. Birdwell asked Powell whether or not
he thought the news media was biased in their reporting. Johnson wanted
to know whether the new Iraqi constitution would protect women’s rights,
and what role the U.S. had in the formation of the constitution.
