Fort
Worth Opera Comedy Comes to Irving High
In
a “first” for Fort Worth Opera education, a touring production of
Puccini’s only comedy opera, Gianni Schicchi, will come to Irving High
School on Wednesday, November 7 at 1:15 p.m. Complete with sets,
costumes and eight young professional opera singers, Gianni Schicchi is
a rollicking, 50-minute, one-act opera based on the story of a wily
Italian who double-crosses a family of buffoons in their attempts to
falsify a will.
As
part of a program that brings opera to students, the production is being
funded by a grant and students will be admitted at no charge. In
addition, the Fort Worth Opera has provided excellent teaching materials
for teachers to share with students, to ensure a well-prepared audience.
Puccini,
the composer, famous for his operas Madama Butterfly, Tosca and La
Boheme, wrote this comedy as a light final act to an evening of three
short operas, and it is acknowledged to be the finest one act opera ever
composed. The story is a real one, from Florence, Italy of the 1300s,
and Gianni Schicchi was a well-known rascal who ended up in Dante's
Inferno for his antics. Sets and costumes by Hip Pocket Theater's Diane
Simons bring out the beauty of 13th century Florence.
