Automotive
Program First in Texas to Receive National Certification
The
Irving ISD Automotive Collision Training Program, located at Ratteree
Career Development Center, is the first in the state of Texas to earn
certification from National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation
(NATEF) and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE).
“During
the past several months we have worked closely with NATEF to make
certain that our program would meet strict industry standards,” said
Judy Christopher, IISD career & technology education director.
“Now we are delighted to join the ranks of NIASE certified technician
training programs. Students will be assured of a quality education, and
shop owners will be assured of getting quality job applicants.”
In
order to achieve this coveted recognition, the training program
underwent rigorous evaluation by NATEF.
Nationally accepted standards of excellence in areas such as
instruction, facilities and equipment were used as criteria for
certification. Upon completion of the evaluation, NATEF recom-mended
that the IISD Auto Collision Program be certified by NIASE, a national,
non-profit organization which tests and certifies repair technicians in
addition to certifying technician training programs.
NATEF
Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Roy Peters, Jr. stated, “Certification of
automotive training programs increases cooperation between local
education and industry leaders. It also gives added assurance that
Irving ISD graduates will be employable entry-level technicians. As a
result, the motoring public will benefit since more qualified repair
technicians will join the work force.”
The
program is now certified for a period of five years, after which it will
be reviewed to ensure that it continues to meet industry standards and
to adjust to the latest technological advances in the rapidly changing
automotive world.

Physical
Educators Featured at Conference

Antonio was the site of the annual Texas Association for Health,
Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD) Summer Conference.

the legislation on their own communities as they prepare for the
upcoming school year. Senate Bill 19 authorizes the State Board of
Education to develop rules that will encourage daily physical activity
for all elementary school children.
Irving
ISD teachers who attended the TAHPERD Conference included: Marcia
Patricelli and Vicki Roiz, Barton; Don Tillson, Davis; Warren Fossett,
