Villanueva Honored as Teacher of
the Month
Robert
Villanueva, Sr., third grade bilingual teacher at Davis Elementary
School, was honored by the IISD Board of Trustees as Teacher of the
Month for February. Villanueva graduated from Riverside High School in
El Paso. He earned an Associate of Arts degree from El Paso Community
College and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies &
Elementary Education from University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).
Villanueva has also earned a master’s degree in educational
administration from UTEP. He began his career as second grade teacher in
Canutillo ISD, then moved to Ysleta ISD while also teaching at UTEP.
Villanueva joined Irving ISD and Davis in 2008, and is certified and
highly qualified for grades 1-8 in elementary self-contained, elementary
Spanish, and English as a second language.

Gallaga Recognized as Employee of
the Month
Jose Gallaga,
attendance facilitator at Cardwell Career Preparatory Center was
recognized by Trustees as Employee of the Month for February. Gallaga
joined IISD in 1994 as physical education aide, then became a truancy
officer in 1998, serving various district schools. Prior to joining
IISD, Gallaga worked as a youth counselor at Irving YMCA. He is also a
member of the Townley Elementary School Campus Improvement Committee.

Higher Performing Schools
Recognized
Trustees
recognized the six IISD schools who earned designation as Higher
Performing Schools by the National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA)
Just for the Kids Program. Schools recognized were John Haley
Elementary School, Hanes Elementary School, Stipes Elementary School,
Austin Middle Schoool, Lamar Middle School, and Singley Academy. At the
elementary and middle school level, the NCEA Just for the Kids campaign
recognizes schools’ better improvement rates compared with students at
other schools with similar demographics. For high schools, recognition
indicates a higher standard of college and career readiness related to
specified subject areas. |

Oh Honored for All-State
Accomplishment
Daniel Oh, viola
player and senior at Irving High School, was honored for having earned a
position in All-State Orchestra for the third consecutive year. Oh is
one of seven orchestra students from Texas Music Educator’s Association
(TMEA) Region 20 selected to join the All-State orchestras. He has
played viola for seven years, and in addition to class instruction from
Irving High Orchestra Director Carl Welle, Oh studies privately with
Ellen Rose, principal viola player for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Outside
of school, Oh is a member of the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra. He has
one brother who plays the cello and his mother plays the piano as a
hobby.
